| another MP3 DJ controller |
[Jan. 5th, 2007|01:44 pm] |
Vestax has announced the VCI-100. It's another all-in-one mixer/control-surface design which I don't like, but since Vestax is making it the mixer might at least be pretty decent. Looks like it's going for around $500, including Tracktor LE. Will be shipping in the US in March |

- Tonight!: I'll be doing a last-minute DJ set at the (nominal) 1-year anniversary Blackmail. What's super-exciting for me is the other guest DJ: Chase, formerly the label head of Re-Constriction Records. You might also remember him as the author of the "Choking on Staples" column from back when IndustrialnatioN magazine was relevant.
When I started DJing I was a broke-ass college student. As soon as I had a regular gig I immediately started the terrifying process of cold-calling labels to beg them for promos. It didn't start off well, to say the least. Then I called Chase. Not only was he was the first label to start servicing me, he also gave me a lot of great advice about how to talk to other labels, who to call, who not to bother with, etc. He really helped me get my DJ career started. He was one of the main lynchpins that held the U.S. scene together in those days. I'm really excited to finally get a chance to meet him. - The next Meat is Thursday, December 21st. As usual you really need to check out Devon's awesome flyer.
Also, mark your calendars: the following two Meat events will be January 18th and February 15th. - And, as usual, Mondays at Death Guild. I'm taking December 18th off — DJ
intoner will again be filling in for me.

| DJ news |
[Nov. 21st, 2006|08:48 pm] |
- This Thursday, of course, is the Thanksgiving edition of Meat @DNA Lounge. Last year was a blast! Oh and be sure to buy Devon a drink
- A late addition: on Friday I'll be spinning at an event called Zoetrope at Julie's (1123 Folsom St — right across from Brainwash) Should be a fun event. I think the last time I spun with DJ Xian was December 2000!
- Next Tuesday (the 28th), I'll be spinning at the New Model Army show at DNA. Attendance is non-optional. Seriously one of the best live acts I've ever heard in my life.
- Looking farther ahead, next month's Meat will be on December 21st Adding that event to the calendar also means I've now chalked up 100 Events at the DNA, making me the second DJ to break into the triple figures there. GO ME!!!
- On a related note, I was curious how many different events I've DJ'ed at so I made an exhaustive list Can anyone think of things I've forgotten?

I neglected to mention I'm taking tonight off from Death Guild — in my place will be DJ intoner.
He'll also be back spinning there in two weeks, but this time I'll be there too. We'll be doing a release party for the new Operative CD: ( flyer after cut ) |

| more mp3 dj equipment |
[Oct. 1st, 2006|12:11 pm] |
It's been awhile since I've written about the current state of MP3 DJing hardware.
The Numark D2 Director is still not out, but it should be in the next month or two. Since it's been announced there's been a couple similar products announced, however.
First up is the Denon DN-HD2500. This actually looks like a pretty solid product. Although they've become an also-ran behind Pioneer in recent years Denon still has a pretty good reputation for making decent decks. The big feature that the Numark product lacks is that you can also attach an optional dual-CD transport (actually the same transport used on the DN-D4500) allowing you to also control normal CD decks. This is huge — it gives club installs a path to add mp3-on-USB capability to an existing system. The bad news is that this product isn't going to ship for another six months or so.
Also Cortex has shipped their first product, the HDC-1000. It's a pretty attractive piece of gear for the price, although from a manufacturer without any track record. Like the forthcoming Denon it allows you to also attach external CD players... however instead of a proprietary dual-deck transport, it'll talk to any old USB CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM for mp3-on-DVD use). This will be significantly cheaper, but probably pretty ugly unless you find a nice dual-CD rackmount case. Actually you could probably just case-mod any old dual-CD deck transport pretty easily (they're all just CD-ROM drives internally)
Probably more interesting is what's happened in the FinalScratch/Serato-like market... over the last 6 months it's gotten more crowded. First, Numark released their own take on the theme, although it seems to be priced in line with the existing products. A far more interesting product is the M-Audio Torq.
What M-Audio has done is try to combine the two laptop-DJ paradigms, creating a product that can be controlled both in using mouse-keyboard-MIDI (similar to, say, Tracktor) and also added optional Serato-like control media (apparently using the Ms Pinky system). Oh, and it's priced quite a bit below Serato. If you're a DJ seriously check out the demo video from last summer's NAMM, it looks amazing. My only fear is that for something announced months ago to great fanfare there don't seem to be many in-depth reviews... just lots of sites regurgitating the M-Audio press releases. At least for now, I think I'm going to be going the Serato route but I'm definitely keeping an eye on this one.
Oh, and here's a roundup Ars Technica did a couple weeks ago on some of the pure-laptop DJ software available today. |

| DJing schedule for August |
[Aug. 3rd, 2006|08:40 pm] |
- Tonight: I'm the guest DJ for the re-opening of Blackmail. The new venue is The Transfer (Church St at Market... imagine if you walked out of Sparky's and crossed Market St — it's right there)
- Thursday, August 17th: I'll be guest DJing at Die Maschinen @Glas Kat
- Thursday, August 24th: Meat @DNA
- Sunday, August 27th: I'll be DJing at the Ayria show @DNA
And of course I'll be upstairs at Death Guild every Monday as usual. I'll be working with a couple guest DJs this month. August 14th (the day after the Haujobb show) Daniel Myer will be be DJing at Death Guild — it looks like he's going to do a set downstairs and a set upstairs. Then the next week (August 21st) DJ Sergio Delirio from Barcelona will be joining us upstairs. |

| DVD DJ'ing |
[Jul. 22nd, 2006|06:09 pm] |
This week Pioneer announced their latest piece of sexy gear — the DVJ-1000 [pics: 1, 2, 3] It combines the video features of their groundbreaking DVJ-X1 deck (the thing Mike Relm uses for his video-scratching tricks) with the size and featureset of the standard CDJ-1000mk3.
A couple things from the DVJ-X1 got dropped (most notably: component video output) but a lot of new things got added like mp3 playback (including from DVD-R!)
MSRP is $2999 (the X1 was $3999) so that'll probably be a little over two grand per deck. |

| Gigs this week |
[May. 22nd, 2006|05:49 pm] |
- Tonight: Death Guild, as usual
- Tomorrow: I'll be the guest DJ at Animate in Berkeley. This is a neat little spot; stop by if you can get yourself to the East Bay
- Friday: Ministry after-party. @DNA. It'll be a late set since I'm also going to the show.
Things a little farther out:- Thursday, June 1st: Affliction's third (and last) anniversary (kind of an arbitrary "anniversary" since the club actually started in February, but hey who's counting, right? Here, just drink this.) When Affliction started as a two room club I was one of its original DJs, doing the "Hard Noise" lounge along with
el_olvidado. It's where I started working on the format that I use these days at Death Guild. I'll be returning to the back room for one-night-only, except this time under the auspices of a mini-Meat - Saturday, June 3rd: Death Guild Thunderdome fundraiser in Alameda. I'm not actually sure if I'm DJing this event or not: I thought we decided that the DJ schedule is already overflowing so I'd just work the event in other capacities. I'm not on the flyer. However, I keep seeing my name in various announcements and I seem to be listed on their web site so maybe I'm on the bill after all. <shrug>
Anyway definitely check this event out; last year's event was the best party I've been to in a long time - Thursday, June 8th: The Elm Street Murders @DNA. Wear clothes you don't mind getting bloody.
- Friday, June 16th: Swindle @DNA. I seem to be listed on the DNA site as DJing there again. I've actually had a lot of fun with this party, check it out if you haven't yet
